My favorite Team CFW - We Can memory from the 2011 season

My favorite Team CFW -We Can! memory from the 2011 season is an easy
pick. It is of course when my son Lukas did his first "real" criterium
race on his strider bike. In fact, he raced both days that weekend
since he did both the Eagle Creek fast crit and the Eagle Creek
Traditional. He was very keen on doing a proper warm-up as he saw all
the more senior racers did, so we went back and forth around the
parking lot for a good 20 minutes. The kids race that day included a
full lap on the actual race course! As you can see, Team CFW - We Can!
was well represented on the start line. Everyone did great, and best
of all, they all got a dollar preem from the race promoter after they
crossed the line.

The course for the second day only included the sprint stretch. Lukas
and another girl thought it was too short so they just kept going
after they finished since they wanted to do a lap again. It took me
and the other dad quite some time to convince them that he had already
completed the race :-)

This was also the weekend when the team had it's big summer party in
conjunction with the races, which was really fun. I did alright in my
two races and finished 7th and 4th in the cat 3/4 races. I had great
support from my whole family who cheered me on. This was also the
weekend when our cat 4 team swept the podium with a 1/2/3 thanks to
some excellent team work throughout the race.

All in all, a great and very special summer weekend of racing in Eagle
Creek Park!

First Things First

In October of last year I decided that I needed some guidance with regard to my off-season training and I hired a personal coach. This was a great decision as my coach wrote all of my workouts for each month and our daily interaction kept me on track and accountable to someone—my personal accountability for training being one of my weak points. As the winter went on I found my bike strength growing and by spring of this year I was feeling really good on the bike, or so I thought.

In May of this year I finally decided to take Ken Nowakowski (Pro Bikes, LTD, Email: probikes@spitfire.net, Phone: 317-507-5398, Website: www.probikesltd.com) up on his bike fitting deal for our team members. I had done some bike positioning tweaks prior to starting my off-season training, but I thought that having Ken take a look at my position and confirming where I had chosen to place myself on the bike could not hurt. I did not know Ken prior to arriving for my bike fitting but had heard that he was knowledgeable, thorough and an all-around nice guy. For those that don’t know, Ken is the former Marian Cycling Team coach and Major Taylor Velodrome director, and was a national level track racer back in the day.

Upon arriving at Ken’s house, where his fitting studio is located, I found that he is truly a welcoming and very nice person. He helped me schlep all of my gear in and we started off our session with some questions about my riding style, current bike issues and my expectations for the coming season.

Over the course of three hours Ken made some key adjustments to my position on the bike and by the end of the session I felt as though I was pedaling with ease, as opposed to my previous position where I was cramped and crushing down on the pedals. I recall at one point, during our conversation before the on-the-bike part of the fit began, Ken asking me if I was having any problems on the bike and I said, “no”. Then, during the on-the-bike part of the fit, I ended up revealing three different issues I had on the bike but had been compensating for them for so long that I no longer considered them “issues”.

By the end of the fit I literally was having a hard time believing that I was able to pedal easier and was able to produce more watts than when I had arrived. It was money and time well spent, without question. Not only that, but during our time together I learned a great deal from Ken about my bike, my position on it and how to ride comfortably with power.

After my fitting, I was kicking myself for waiting so long to have Ken do my bike fit. I spent the seven previous months of training, and paying for coaching, while in the wrong position on my bike!

I know that several of our teammates, at one time or another, have had Ken perform a bike fit and that they’ve had a great experience. Recently I sent a friend to Ken for a bike fit and he told me that, after pedaling the bike for a couple of minutes on the trainer, Ken asked him how long it took before his feet went numb—an issue that my friend had not revealed to him prior to that point!

I would recommend to all of you who have never had a professional bike fit and to those that have (I had two prior to seeing Ken and his was by far the best), to take Ken up on his bike fit deal (for Team CFW members only) before you start your winter training. You’ll be thankful you did.

Hey team

Hi everyone,
Finally my kona week is upon me. I'm 6days to go for the ironman. Yeah!

I've been lucky enough to spend a few weeks here training for the race. It's been awesome riding (and swimming). We've ridden the course a ton. I definitely feel comfortable on it.

Race day will be Oct 8. My number is 1093. You can watch the race on www.ironmanlive.com.

You should check out the site. Some good footage from all the Pre race activities.

This town is alive with the most insanely athletes. It's very intimidating. I'm just glad not to be a guy!  There are about 1450 men competing and 450 women. Talk about posturing!

I have few expectations for this race, other than completion.
Sadly, I've been dealing with a very aggravating foot injury for the past 4 months. I've done almost no running.
So, I should have a strong swim, solid bike and a forward moving marathon. How's that for a prediction???

The good news is that I'm determined to be back. So, the next race will be even better.

Thanks for the cheering.
Catherine lacrosse
